Athene Law proudly announces the Health Law and Policy Access Internship.
Athene Law and the Center for Legal Affairs of the California Medical Association (CMA) are proud to announce the Health Law and Policy Access Internship, designed to increase access to the health care law sector for law students from underrepresented communities and backgrounds. With the long-term goal of increasing diversity of perspectives in the health law segment of the legal profession, the internship is intended to provide law students demonstrating high potential with an intensive and meaningful legal experience at two prominent health law organizations.
Features of the Internship
- Work full-time for 10 weeks over the summer in a supervised and mentored experience, physically-based in CMA’s office in Sacramento, California.
- Work with attorneys and other professionals in the health care law sector throughout California.
- Earn compensation competitive with private law firm summer associate compensation.
- Interns will engage in work for both Athene Law and CMA during the entire 10-week period, giving them direct, hands-on experience and involvement with various health law projects, including client interaction, litigation and legislative proceedings, and stakeholder meetings.
- Work with or have meaningful interactions with industry leaders and experienced attorneys.
- Receive mentorship that extends beyond the 10-week internship period.
Candidate Criteria
- A demonstrated commitment to or strong interest in a legal career in health care law.
- First- or second-year law student, in good standing, at an ABA-accredited law school.
- A demonstrated commitment to community service and/or civic leadership.
- A demonstrable background or life experience of overcoming adversity.
- Each participant must commit to spending 10 weeks during the summer working full-time in CMA offices in Sacramento, California, including possible travel to San Francisco.
- Participants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Selection Timeline and Process
Applications typically are accepted through winter break and January each year, with two rounds of interviews in early Spring. Final selections are usually announced by March or April. More details will be provided within the application materials and during the open application time period.

- Share your current resume or CV.
- Share an unofficial copy of your most up-to-date law school transcript (1Ls can submit first semester/quarter grades separately after the application deadline, if necessary).
- Include a legal writing sample (5-10 pages) that is an original work unedited by a third party or AI.
- Include two references: one commenting on your law school or undergraduate work and the other serving as a personal reference.
- OPTIONAL: Share up to two recommendation letters, not to exceed two pages each.
- Craft a personal statement of 500-1,000 words articulating why you are pursuing this fellowship experience and explaining your significant academic achievements, personal accomplishments, and life experiences that have shaped your values and professional goals. Information may include, but is not limited to, experiences and reflections based on adversities you have faced on account of your upbringing, socioeconomic factors, or other unique aspects of your background.
