Fellowship Features

  • Full-time, 10-week supervised and mentored experience either physically based in Sacramento, California or remotely if required under COVID pandemic conditions, working with attorneys and other professionals in the health care law sector (approximately half of the fellowship with Athene and the other half with CMA);

  • Stipend comparable to BigLaw summer associate compensation;

  • Direct, hands-on experience and involvement with various health law projects, including client interaction, litigation and legislative proceedings, and stakeholder meetings;

  • Working with or having meaningful interaction with industry leaders and experienced attorneys;

  • An in-depth research and writing project on an important health law topic to be jointly chosen by the Fellow and program mentors; and

  • Mentorship that extends beyond the 10-week fellowship period.

Candidate Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment or strong interest in a legal career in health care law;

  • First- or second-year law student, in good standing, at an ABA accredited law school;

  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and/or civic leadership;

  • Member of an underrepresented group as set forth by the EEOC, member of the LGBTQ community, or member of a group traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession, including BIPOC law students, women law students or others of diverse backgrounds;

  • Fellows must commit to spending 10 weeks during the summer working full time in CMA offices in Sacramento, California, with possible travel to San Francisco and other parts of California (provided that in-person work and travel are permitted under state and federal COVID guidelines at that time); and

  • Authorized to work in the United States.


Athene Law, LLP (Athene) and the Center for Legal Affairs of the California Medical Association (CMA) proudly announce a first-of-its-kind equity and inclusion Health Law and Policy Fellowship (Fellowship) for summer 2021, designed to increase access to the health care law sector for law students from underrepresented communities and backgrounds. With the long-term goal of increasing diversity in the health law segment of the legal profession, the Fellowship is designed to provide law students demonstrating high potential with an intensive and meaningful legal experience at two prominent health law organizations.
